Planes, Games & Automobiles – a great day out for the whole family

Monday June 4th 2012 (Jubilee Bank Holiday)

Goodwood Motor Circuit

www.fundaysforcharity.eu

Come and celebrate the Jubilee with us on a right royal day out in the heart ofSussexat the wonderful Goodwood circuit/Aerodrome, home to the world famous Revival meeting.

We have arranged something for everybody from a Track Day and a Fly In to face painting and games and everything in between. Whether you want to bring a picnic and join us for a Jubilee Street Party complete with bunting and cakes or just come along and look at the wonderful classic cars on display – possibly even going on your own Dream Ride around the surrounding countryside. Children can enter our cake baking competition, or turn up in 1950s fancy dress – the best outfit wins a prize. We are running a Craft competition to celebrate Her Majesty’s Jubilee – templates for crowns and diamonds are on the website and the completed hanging collage will be presented to the Queen by the Children’s Fund.

Welfare

By making donations to the RNRMCF you enable us to continue to support families that need our help. As always the type of help that we are asked to provide is wide ranging and covers many different areas. Recently we have seen several cases where the family has needed support with respite care costs. One family have a young child with Cerebral Palsy and another family need support as the mother goes through chemotherapy. In both cases we were able to help them with these costs and relieve some of the pressure on the family. As so many of you will be aware even seemingly minor costs such as childminding are hard to find and when a family is also coping with illness or disability the fact that we can help them with these costs makes such a difference to their daily lives.

Many of you might not be aware that we support children up to the age of 25. We feel that young people are not quite ready to face the world alone at the age of 18 and a recent case has highlighted this. A young man of twenty whose parents had both died and is considered vulnerable was looking at life on the streets. He had been living on friend’s sofas whilst trying to hold down his job and now, after losing his job, had run out of places to stay. He is getting support with the process of applying for benefits and housing but we were able to help him with an emergency grant whilst he waited.

Fabulous Fundraisers

Wellford United: Shane and Andy Stafford and the football team they formed in March 2011 made up of family and friends. Rather than finding a sponsor they decided to support us and now proudly bear our logo on their shirts. Starting with weekly training sessions they affiliated with the Hampshire Football Association and were accepted into the City of Portsmouth Sunday Football League Division 2. Having arranged several start of season friendly matches they were able to assess their standard and positions that their players would be best suited to play in. Full details of how they are getting on can be found on the website.

Tracey Smith organised a wonderful ball down in the West Country. Laurene went along and said it was the most wonderful evening – Tracey had secured some amazing auction prizes and the whole evening went brilliantly.

Our thanks to all at HMS Victory where we held a lovely event in October attended by some of our supporters including Tenors UnLimited who sang for us amidst the guns. With an after dinner speech by the wonderful Sir Michael Parkinson the evening was a huge success. Thanks to Nauticalia, Jonathan Bowman, Hilton Hotels, Trinity House and Hildon Water who all supported the evening.

In June we had the finals of our Children’s Art Competition in aid of Seafarers Awareness Week. we had a lovely tea party at theRoyalMarinesMuseum in Southsea where the pictures were all on display and we presented the winners with their prizes. Our thanks to all at the Museum and to Micro-Scooters and Carte Blanche who supplied some of the prizes. The finalists all feature in a calendar we have produced which is only £4. It is a non-year specific calendar so you can have for many years to come – use it to record special birthdays and anniversaries.

We are now launching our 2012 competition – details on the website.

We are, as ever, hugely grateful to all that fundraise on our behalf and with this newsletter we are able to say thankyou to a few of them. We thank you all – you really are making a difference to the lives of the children we support.

Thinking of writing or updating your will? – maybe leaving a legacy to RNRMCF?

If so, Solicitors George Ide LLP now provide a will-making service at a discount to our supporters and families. You can take advantage of this service by contacting Paul Asling on 01243 831006 or following the link on our website. You do not have to leave a gift in your Will to use this service by George Ide will make a donation to the RNRMCF for every Will made by one of our supporters.

Corporate Supporters

BAE Systems

We were the charity partner of BAE Systems inPortsmouthfor two years and they have been the most brilliant supporters of our work. With fundraising and volunteering covering activities ranging from Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, doing a mile carrying 300lb (and yes, you did read that right!), to craft making workshops they have been extraordinary.

A wonderful team led by Sean Collins, Elliot Webber and Lorie Coffey have motivated, exhorted, challenged and supported as they raced towards raising us the most that they could. They were one of the most successful charity challenge teams of all the BAE branches – and we are overwhelmingly grateful to them for all their hard work.

Over the course of their two years they raised an extraordinary £27,173.55 through all their various activities and clocked up an amazing 2733 volunteer hours. All this amazing endeavour meant that their parent company have now given us an amazing £51,299 in additional funding making a total of £78,472.55. I am sure all will agree that they have been truly amazing and wonderful and superlatives now escape me. We cannot thank them enough on behalf of all the children that we will be able to support because of their help.

Sporting Bears Drivers Club

We are delighted to have been chosen by a great organisation – the Sporting Bears – as one of their charities to support. Led in our area by the energetic and enterprising Baz Firth they are hoping to raise money and awareness of the Children’s Fund across the South East this year. They will be at the Jubilee day in June at Goodwood Motor Circuit where they will be offering Dream Rides around the countryside in their classic motors. We will also be accompanying them to various supercar shows at Dunsfold and Wilton House later in the year – if you are there look out for the Children’s Fund tent and come and see us.

Plymouth Junior Lawyers

These are a bunch of bright young lawyers who are busy fundraising away for us – when they aren’t working very hard that is. So far they have held a quiz night and some of them are planning to run a half marathon in aid of the Children’s Fund.

Naked Strength

Encouraged by the wonderful bunch of Royal Marines led by Les Barrow who did some amazing things for the Children’s Fund last year (see our website) Tim Peace and the team at Naked Strength have chosen us as their charity for the New Forest Festival of Running this March 10th and 11th – full details on the website.

In the office, we receive a lot of correspondence which sometimes is quite harrowing to read. This arrived recently in our office, in a plain envelope and handwritten on a sheet of lined paper ripped from a notebook. There was no signature or return address so the author remains anonymous.

It has moved us all so much, we felt we had to share this remarkable poem.

Fighting for

For my child.

I packed my bag and said goodbye

I didn’t want to see you cry

I hoped you wouldn’t wonder why

I’m leaving you for war

I sailed away far out to sea

I hoped that you’d remember me

And one day that you would see

Why I had to go to war

I place your photo by my bed

I say goodnight and kiss your head

And think of stories we have read

In the dim lit bunk of war

I hope that you are safe and strong

My duties here will not go wrong

And I’ll return where I belong

With you and not at war

For my love.

I write a letter just in case

I don’t return to see that face

The sea’s the final resting place

For sailors lost at war

If in some far off foreign land

Or some sun scorched desert sand

I’m broken by another’s hand

Then flown back from the war

Don’t salute as I return

Pray a peace we all will earn

Before our children take their turn

To suffer in a war

My child without a mum or dad

Will never live a life so glad

As many others children had

Because I went to war

For my nation.

To fight for country, and for queen

To fight for those I’ve never seen

To fight for comrades in the war

But, it’s my child I’m fighting for

If I return all broken, or don’t return at all

I pray my country and my queen

I hope all those I’ve never seen

Remember it’s my child that’s been

Their casualty of war

So do your bit to honour us

And keep our children safe

Just as we lived to honour you

And took our dreaded place

Amongst the pain and sorrow and suffering we saw

Don’t let our little children be lost casualties of war.

Saturday 10th / Sunday 11th March 2012

http://nakedstrength.co.uk/events/new-forest-festival-of-running/

This promises to be the biggest and best weekend of Running the south has seen for many years – and what makes it better, it’s done the Naked Strength way so there’s something for everyone to take part in. From absolute novice to National elite, young to old, racing snakes to those who consider themselves a little larger than they’d like, our doors are open and we welcome you to a big scale event that still holds a personal and friendly appeal.

The Red Shoot Camping Park (Event HQ) is situated in the most perfect location to access theNew Forest whilst keeping you off the roads. Because we’ve focused on Location, Location, Location all of these runs have limited places and we will be operating a shuttle bus service from the off site car parks which are less than a 4 minute bus ride. The Naked Strength Events Team have taken the view that you would much prefer an amazing and safe run in the heart of theForest, rather than a hard road slog to get amongst the ponies!!!

We are very much about your sport being part of your family so please bring them along to support; there will be variety of children’s activities and retail outlets to keep them occupied whilst you’re out in theNew Forest…

A Naval officer’s daughter with serious health issues has benefitted from a donation by the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Children’s Fund.

A seriously-ill teenage girl, Harriet Bond – the daughter of submariner Lt Ian Bond – has received a life-changing Christmas gift thanks mainly to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Children’s Fund and Naval welfare support service.

Harriet, aged 13, has been given a special text-based mobile phone to allow her to communicate more regularly with friends and family.

Until now Harriet has been loaned a similar phone – called a Lightwriter Connect and costing almost £5,000 – during her daytime attendance at the Lavinia Norfolk Centre in Angmering, a centre for young children with physical, mental, medical and sensory difficulties.

But having her own, upgraded model – which has been funded by the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Children’s Fund charity and two local Rotary clubs – will open up her world 24 hours a day.

She will be able to stay in touch with her group of close friends plus when necessary have phone conversations with mum Sarah, dad Ian and 19-year-old brother Henry.

She became seriously ill in 2006 with a rare neurological condition Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM).

She suffered another episode of the illness in 2009 which left her with severe mobility, speech and feeding difficulties, although her intellectual capabilities remain intact.

Harriet’s family has been supported throughout her illness by the Naval Personal and Family Service and Royal Marines Welfare which offers a comprehensive social work service to RN personnel and their families.

They played a big part, securing the funds to ensure Harriet receives the £4,585 Lightwriter in time for Christmas.

Two special mounts to allow the Lightwriter to be fitted to Harriet’s two wheelchairs were provided by the Snowdrop charity.

Harriet’s submariner father, Lt Bond, said: “Harriet’s illness has been devastating to our family; she is such a lovely, full-of-life girl who always has a smile on her face.

“Her first episode of ADEM saw her make a very good recovery in a short space of time. However this time around her improvements have been a lot slower. We all remain positive that her recovery will continue to improve.

“The level of support she has received has been extremely uplifting.

“This new Lightwriter will enable her to socialise with her new friends she is making at Lavinia Norfolk Centre.

“Thank you just doesn’t sound enough but we are all very grateful to all who have helped her.”

Friday May 18th 2012

The Saxon manor of Esledes was an ideal place for the descendant of one of William the Conqueror’s lords, Robert de Crevecoeur, to fortify and build a castle in 1119. LeedsCastlepassed into royal hands in 1278 and became part of the Queen of England’s dower – the settlement widowed queens received upon the death of their husbands. Over the course of 150 years it was held by six mediaeval queens: Eleanor of Castile, Margaret of France, Isabella of France, Joan of Navarre, Anne of Bohemia and Catherine de Valois.

In Tudor times Henry VIII visited frequently, notably with his Queen, Catherine of Aragon, and their entire court on the way to the tournament of the Field of the Cloth of Gold, which took place inFrancein 1520. Henry’s son, King Edward VI, granted the castle to one of Henry’s courtiers for his services. Since then it has been in private ownership. It has been used as a garrison, a prison and a convalescent home, as well as being the home of the Culpeper, Fairfax and Wykeham Martin families. It was refurbished in the 1920s by Lady Baillie, an American heiress, and is now maintained by the Leeds Castle Foundation for the benefit and enjoyment of the public.
